About Cheryl

cheryl1

My name is Cheryl Foiles and I’m a 49 year old wife, mother, and IT professional. I am working hard to develop a healthy lifestyle that will take me into my golden years and beyond. I’m not a nutritionist (although I have studied nutrition for many years) or a doctor, just an everyday gal trying to take a common sense approach to a healthier lifestyle.

I started this blog after receiving a wake-up call that changed my life.  Yes, I know that sounds a little melodramatic but it’s true — my body was trying to tell me it needed attention.  After years of neglect including a poor diet, lack of exercise, too much stress, and poor sleep habits my body had enough and told me so.  The date was November 11, 2008.

My approach to healthy living is based on common sense and sound advice from trusted advisers.  You won’t find any fad diets, diet aids, grueling workouts, or other “get skinny quick” gimmicks.  For me, it’s not about being skinny, it’s about being healthy, and I believe that if you have a healthy lifestyle, your weight will take care of itself.  It’s worked for me — I’ve lost 43 pounds in six months, I feel better, I have more energy, and my cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar are all under control.

I hope you will decide to adopt a healthy lifestyle, with or without this web site.  It is my goal to provide a site that helps inspire and motivate you along your path to healthy living.

Daily Lessons:

  • One small apple has the same number of calories as one Oreo cookie (55). Replace 3 cookies a day with one apple and save 770 calories a week.
  • Three, 10-minute exercise sessions are just as effective as one 30-minute session. Lace up those shoes and take a brisk walk morning, afternoon, and evening. You'll burn, on average, about 200 calories a day and your heart will be healthier.
  • If you don't have time for a healthy lunch, eat something to hold you over like an apple, orange, or some nuts. Avoid the temptation to go to the vending machine or to the fast food drive through lane.
  • Instead of ice cream, go for sorbet 1/2 cup has only about 100 calories and 0 grams of fat.
  • Cutting out 150 calories every day could save you from gaining 15 pounds a year
